PRESERVATION MARYLAND’s COMMUNITY CHOICE AWARD
PROJECT STATUS: COMPLETED
Pyramid Atlantic Art Center and the City of Hyattsville worked with Rayya Newman, AIA, now Principal of Triple Line Studio, to design a papermaking, printmaking, and book arts center in the historic brick Arcade Building.
Newman was the project architect for the design and construction of this project, working closely with the client to adjust the design in order to meet the nonprofit’s needs for stable revenue to support their programs. Historic features of the property, such as brick archways, faux column capitals, and the ghost of an old stairwell, were carefully worked into the adaptive reuse of this building.
The Arcade Building has housed many community spaces since it’s construction in 1890, from a church, to a silent movie theater, and even a bowling alley (ask to see the old wooden pin was which was found in the wall!). We were proud to receive Preservation Maryland’s Community Choice Award in 2017 for this project and enjoy seeing this building continue to serve the community, as it has over the years.
“The award for the Pyramid Atlantic Arts Center project was to recognize the City of Hyattsville and the organizations that have revitalized the underutilized property in the heart of Hyattsville,” said Preservation Maryland’s Communications Director Meagan Baco. “After thoughtful planning efforts and skilled design and implementation, the once overlooked structure is now home to the Pyramid Arts Center, the Maryland Milestones Heritage Center and the Neighborhood Design Center – bringing together the arts and history for increased community engagement and heritage tourism.”
